I need potty help!

So we took A to pick out a toy that he can have when he is finished with potty training. He finds the toy he wants and is all excited to get it. Then Jon says to him "you can't have that until you only wear underwear and pee in the toilet." He immediatly says "No, I don't want it. I gotta put it back". he puts it back and walks away. CRAP He knows exactly what we want...and still won't do it. So i'm leaving now to go BEAT MY HEAD AGAINST A WALL!! Dang smart stubborn kid!

So my question is, what would your next move be?

Kate did the very same thing, as well as telling me "I will pee in my diaper if I want to!".

I just let it go and waited until she seemed more ready. The one thing that made the most difference is hauling the potty to the family room, putting it on the floor (on a towel) and let her sit while watching tv. She finally did #2 and got a bunch of hi fives and major happy dance from me.

That was a bit of a break through for her. She didn't like cleanup after she'd gone in her diaper, so we talked about that every time. (I didn't like cleaning poop out of nooks and crannies anymore either).

When she finally saw the light, and realized that going on the potty is much nicer than walking around with wet or messy diapers, it was a breeze.

She just had to find out for herself that it was better. We also bribed her with lots of cars from Cars after that. She just needed the bigger incentive. (I think these kids are just too smart.)

Good luck with it!

With Sophie all we did was say we weren't buying her diapers or pull-ups or anything like that anymore. She was either going to have to poop and pee in her underpants or in the potty. That was all she needed to push her over the 6 month hump of trying to potty train her and her resisting all the way. My sister did the same for her 4 year old son who refused to use the potty to poop. I told her what we did with Sophie and she tried it with her son and he was potty trained in a few days. Who knows, maybe it will work with Allistair. I figured buying new underpants every week was cheaper than buying new diapers! :) Good Luck!
